The benchmark VN-Index on the Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange added 0.24 per cent to 912.12 points.
The index had gained only 0.18 per cent from the previous week.
Nearly 270 million shares were traded on the southern bourse, worth VND4 trillion (US$172.8 million).
Securities and banking stocks made gains in the morning session to lift the market.
Major gainers in the sectors included SSI Securities (SSI), HCM City Securities (HCM), VietCapital Securities (VCI), VNDirect Securities (VND), FPT Securities (FTS), Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam (BID), Vietinbank (CTG), HDBank (HDB) and Military Bank (MBB).
On the Ha Noi Stock Exchange, the HNX-Index was up 1.67 per cent to close Monday morning at 135.72 points.
More than 48.3 million shares were traded on the northern exchange, worth VND557 billion.
The afternoon trading session starts at 1pm.
