In a recent directive regarding how to mitigate traffic jams in the city, the prime minister asked that the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee work with relevant government agencies to do all they can to mitigate the traffic jams in the city, including to expand Tan Son Nhat airport.
He asked that the Ministry of Transport work with the committee to build different schemes of investment, expansion and upgrade for the airport and propose to the prime minister by February 25.
He also asked the city to invest in public transportation more, as well as parking lots, in order to limit parking on roads, which is one of the main reasons for traffic jams, and increase educating people on traffic rulres.
At the moment in the city there are 37 spots which are extremely prone to traffic jams, including roads linking the edges of the city with the center, and near coach stations and Tan Son Nhat airport. A reason, as pointed out by expert, is bad urban planning.
The prime minister asked the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee to encourage people to move to the suburbs by building infrastructure in those areas, making sure that no new high-rise buildings can potentially exacerbate the traffic jams, as well as have a roadmap towards limiting personal vehicles and develop public transportation.
He also asked that the MoT work with relevant government agencies to build roads linking provinces in the Southwestern with Long An port so as to decrease the volume of vehicles going through Ho Chi Minh City in order to make this trip.
Earlier, at a meeting with government agencies to find ways to decrease overloading at Tan Son Nhat airport on January 20, Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung approved the scheme to invest VND19.7 trillion ($872 million) to increase the capacity of Tan Son Nhat airport to between 43 and 45 millioni visitors per year.
One of the proposed ways to resolve the overloading of Tan Son Nhat airport is to build Long Thanh international airport in Dong Nai province. The project, which costs a total $16 billion will be funded by the state budget and official development assistance and other sources. At the moment the developer Airport Corporation of Vietnam has just finished gathering public opinion on the airport’s architecture plan.
