Market liquidity was active, with 138 million shares being traded on both markets, worth VND2.22 trillion (US$102.8 million).
On the HCM City Stock Exchange, the VN-Index gained 0.18 per cent to reach 625.22 points, and the HNX Index on the northern bourse added 0.47 per cent to close at 89 points.
On the southern bourse, insurance shares continued to make large gains, driving the market upward.
Bao Viet Holdings (BVH) gained VND3,500, or 5.64 per cent, to reach VND65,500 per share. BIDV Insurance Corporation (BIC) gained 4.42 per cent, while Bao Minh Insurance Corporation (BMI) hit the ceiling value of VND21,700.
In addition, Ma San Group (MSN) added VND3,500, or four per cent, to close at VND91,000 per share.
Three codes that traded more than five million shares were HCM City Infrastructure Investment JSC (CII), Military Bank (MBB) and HAI Agrochem Joint Stock Company (HAI).
The northern bourse was lifted by bank shares and securities shares.
Sai Gon-Ha Noi Bank (SHB) and Asia Commercial Bank (ACB) rose by 5.56 and 2.19 per cent, respectively. SHB was also the most active code, with more than 16 million of its shares being traded.
Securities shares such as VNDirect Securities JSC (VND) and Sai Gon-Ha Noi Securities JSC (SHS) gained 0.72 and 1.19 per cent, respectively, boosting the market.
