The Hanoi Stock Exchange burst into life Monday, helped by investors rushing into speculative stocks.

The benchmark HNX-Index added 1.75 points or 2.28 per cent, closing at 78.53 points. Up to 263 stocks were up, compared with just 42 off and 84 unchanged.

Trading volume strongly rose on the northern bourse, up some 12 per cent to 67.4 million shares worth VND806.7 billion ($39.3 million).

Cash flows focused on driving stocks including Kim Long Securities (KLS), VnDirect Securities (VND), PetroVietnam Construction (PVX) and Vietnam Construction and Import-Export (VCG) with million shares matched each.

VCG and SongDa Infrastructure Construction (SDH) both hit the ceiling, along with other PetroVietnam-family stocks like PetroVietnam Power Land (PVL), PetroVietnam Northern Gas (PVG) and PetroVietnam Southern Gas (PGS) sharply jumping.

Securities company shares modestly climbed on increasing selling pressures from investors locking in profits.

The Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange also saw speculative stocks outperforming today, led by Hoang Quan Consulting-Trading-Service Real Estate Corp (HQC) hitting the ceiling and active the most with 2.7 million shares matched.

The real estate stock hit the ceiling for the fourth straight session, after the company’s chairman registering to sell an 11.25 per cent stake.

Some small stocks with lower-than-par-value prices like Becamex Infrastructure Development (IJC), Nam Viet Corp. (ANV), Pha Lai Thermal Power (PPC) and Huu Lien Asia Corp. (HLA) also suddenly rallied. Those stocks were all sharply up, after seeing more than one million shares matched each.

Major stocks like Saigon Securities Inc. (SSI), Ocean Group (OGC), Hoa Phat Group (HPG) and FPT Corp. (FPT) and banking stocks largely declined.

The benchmark VN-Index advanced 3.01 points or 0.65 per cent to 462.93 points, helped by the pillars Bao Viet Holdings (BVH) and Masan Group (MSN) hitting the ceiling. Some 139 stocks added and 90 were off.

Liquidity reached 52.2 million shares worth VND862.8 billion ($42.1 million), among them put-through volumes making up more than seven million units.
