Deutsche Bahn's official statement mentions only a figure "in the billions of euros" but sources close to the rail firm told AFP the deal would amount to approximately six billion euros.

The contract is for up to 300 high-speed trains known as "ICx", which will be delivered to Deutsche Bahn in tranches up until 2030.

The first batch of 130 trains is expected to be on the rails by December 2016, according to Deutsche Bahn, which noted that the definitive contract will only be signed in a fortnight or so.
