BASF Vietnam and its co-sponsors broke ground on four new classrooms at Phuong Ninh Primary and Secondary School in Hau Giang province, about 250 km from Ho Chi Minh City

The project includes four new classrooms covering 256 square metres and a 1,000 sq.m playground, aimed at enhancing the educational experience for both teachers and students.

This eighth project, facilitated by Saigon Children’s Charity CIO as part of its ‘School Building’ programme, will benefit approximately 150 students annually upon its completion in the first quarter of 2025.

According to Erick Contreras, managing director of BASF Vietnam, the company supports the United Nations' sustainable development goal of providing quality education to the community.

Offering the next generation the best start in life with safer and more comfortable learning facilities through school renovation is one of our social engagement priorities. It is especially meaningful this year as we celebrate our 30th anniversary in Vietnam and continue to drive this long-term programme with our key customers and business partners to support the country’s future talents.

Located about 250km from Ho Chi Minh City, the school is situated in a remote district of Hau Giang province in the Mekong Delta region, where approximately 65 per cent of the population works in agriculture and the average income per capita is about VND5 million (equivalent $200) per month.

The existing school, built in the 1990s, is in a rundown and unsafe condition for its over 600 students, especially in hot weather and the rainy season.

The school will be refurbished with products meeting Green Label Certifications sponsored by Nippon Paint Vietnam. These products, made from sustainable raw materials provided by BASF, will ensure long-term benefits for the school environment, focusing on health, safety, and energy efficiency.

Other key partners include: Hexachem, a distributor of chemical additives for the plastics sector; MKVN Chemicals, a part of Azelis, a distributor of personal care, home care chemicals, and other functional products; Sam Chem Sphere, a distributor of industrial chemicals, industrial lubricants, fleet lubricants, and waterproofing materials; and Tam Tran Co., a distributor of basic chemicals for paints, inks, and plastics.

BASF Vietnam has also engaged in different long-term community projects focusing on educational development.

BASF Kids’ Lab, in partnership with Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, offers hands-on activities to help children learn about chemistry, benefiting around 5,000 primary students since 2011.

BASF Virtua, Lab, an online platform, provides a variety of interactive chemistry experiments in Vietnamese, now offering 14 virtual experiments for primary students to learn about chemistry with just a few clicks.

Since 2019, the company has partnered with Think Playgrounds to build eight public playgrounds, mostly on the outskirts of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, helping almost 32,000 children learn through play and develop multiple skills through outdoor activities.

BASF has been active in Vietnam since the establishment of its representative office in 1994 and celebrates its 30-year presence in the country this year. BASF Vietnam Limited was set up in 2009. The company maintains two sales offices in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, offering solutions for Vietnam’s key industries, including agriculture, construction, automotive, footwear, paints and coatings, and electrical and electronics devices.
