The information was shared by Kim Sung Hun, general director of Amkor Technology Vietnam, at a meeting with Nguyen Anh Tuan, Secretary of Bac Ninh Party Committee, on January 18. The meeting focused on the company's production plan up to 2025, as well as its factory building ambitions for the next phase.
Hun shared that Amkor Vietnam produced its first items in December 2023. The company is conducting testing on these pieces, with a plan for mass production in 2024. The company hopes to continue to receive support from the provincial authorities to allow it to start large-scale production as planned, and is committed to continuing its next-phase investments.
Tuan said, "2023 was a challenging year for Bac Ninh. However, the fact that the Amkor factory has been inaugurated and put into operation in Yen Phong 2C Industrial Park is positive for the province. We hope Amkor will continue to call on other semiconductor investors from the United States and South Korea to invest in Bac Ninh, forming a semiconductor ecosystem in the locality."
He further noted that Amkor's first Vietnamese-made products would mark an important start for Bac Ninh as it makes its debut on the global semiconductor map. It will also be a new driving force for the province to develop a high-tech industry over the coming years. The provincial authorities are committed to creating new advantages for Amkor's business and production activities.
On October 11, 2023, Amkor Technology opened its semiconductor assembly and testing factory in Bac Ninh that is valued at $1.6 billion. The chip factory will become Amkor's most advanced facility, delivering next-generation semiconductor packaging capabilities.
Upon completion, it will feature 200,000 square metres of cleanroom space. Beginning with the advanced system for package and memory production, the factory will offer turnkey solutions from design to electrical testing to the world’s leading semiconductor and electronic manufacturing companies.
Susan Y. Kim, vice president of Amkor Group said, "Amkor Bac Ninh is set to become a pivotal anchor in our global semiconductor operations network. This endeavour not only underscores our commitment to sustainable development in the semiconductor sector but also paves the way for fostering a robust semiconductor ecosystem in Vietnam."
