Guinness record breaking cable car on the go

On February 2, Fansipan-Sapa cable car system, the world’ longest three-rope cable car system has come into operation, according to newswire Vneconmy.

Being the first phase of the Fansipan-Sapa tourism complex in the northern province of Lao Cai, the cable car system is an investment of Vietnamese real estate developer Sun Group, worth VND4.4 trillion ($197.5 million). It extends from Lao Cai province’s Sapa town to Fansipan peak.

The construction of the cable car system was kicked off on November 2, 2013. The first failed attempt to place the project in operation on April 30, 2015 failed, delaying the project until now.

The cable cars can carry a maximum of 2,000 passengers an hour, by accommodating 35 passengers per cabin. It takes only between 15 to 20 minutes to reach the 3,143 metre peak of Fansipan Mountain by cable car, instead of the usual one to two days trek.

Along with the cable car, other units, including stations, restaurants, and souvenir stores, were designed by world-leading architect Bill Bensley. The units’ patterns were designed after the brocatelle patterns of the Northwest region’s ethnic communities.

“The cable car will not only make Lao Cai and Fansipan become a favoured tourism destination for everyone but will also create jobs for the locals as well as contribute to the socio-economic development of the northwest region in general and the province in particular,” said Deputy Prime Minster Hoang Trung Hai at the ceremony.

The cable car system sets two Guinness World Records, namely the world’s longest three-rope cable car with its total length of 6,292.5 metres and the world’s highest three-rope cable car with a height difference between the departure and arrival terminals of 1,410 metres.
