The 2013 Vietnam-Japan Economic Summit themed “Strengthening bilateral ties for the new era” opened in Hanoi on September 5, as part of activities to mark the 40th anniversary of the two countries’ diplomatic relations.

Addressing the event, Chairman of the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) Vu Tien Loc said that over the past four decades, Japan has been Vietnam’s strategically important strategic partner. The country leads others in investment in Vietnam, both in quantity and quality, he added.

Executive Vice President of the Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO) Daisuke Hiratsuka said in his speech that Vietnam’s improved investment environment, financial and banking restructuring, infrastructure and support industry will forge new economic ties between the two nations.

Co-hosted by the VCCI, JETRO, the Japan Business Publication, the Vietnam Economic Times, the Japanese Embassy in Vietnam, the Japan International Cooperation Agency and the Vietnam-Japan Friendship Parliamentarian Alliance, the event is expected to connect firms and update business and cultural exchange opportunities.

Japan is now the biggest donor of official development assistance to Vietnam with a value of nearly 22 billion USD.

The country is also the third largest bilateral trade partner of Vietnam with two-way trade reaching 25 billion USD last year.
