The annual competition – the Academy Awards of the engineering industry organised by the American Council of Engineering Companies of New York (ACEC New York) - pays tribute to exemplary engineering achievements throughout the world.
At the awards ceremony in New York on April 30, Vice Chairman of the Danang City People’s Committee Vo Duy Khuong said the bridge is the pride of Danang.
Rong Bridge is an envoy of peace and goodwill, linking Vietnam to international friends, he said, adding that the award acknowledges the bridge’s techniques, structure and architecture are on a par with international standards.
Nick Ivanoff, President of Ammann&Whitney, one of the companies designing Rong Bridge, said he was very surprised that the project beat out the competition of many strong rivals to win the prestigious prize.
The bridge received high acclamation for its unique and special structural design which harmoniously combined aesthetics and utility as well as socio-economic and technical values. It is closely associated with Vietnamese culture and origin of Vietnamese people.
The bridge is 66m in length and has six lanes and was the 7th constructed crossing the Han River, helping shorten travel time from Danang International Airport to the city centre.
The structure, designed by the US-based Ammann & Whitney Consulting Engineers and Louis Berger Group Inc., officially opened to traffic in March 2013.
