The province’s development strategy has been laid out in its comprehensive planning, which is designed to maximise the region’s inherent advantages. The plan provides a practical foundation for organising economic and social space within the province, creating a legal framework that ensures the efficient exploitation of local resources.
The official planning for the province was unveiled earlier this year |
This long-term vision is expected to guide urban and rural development, as well as technical and specialised planning, while also facilitating the completion of growth targets in the shortest possible timeframe.
By 2030, Tien Giang aims to become an industrial province with a focus on developing a diversified economy driven by industry, services, and agriculture. The province is targeting a regional GDP growth rate of 7-8 per cent annually, supported by the continued development of modern infrastructure.
As part of its long-term strategy, Tien Giang is also looking to strengthen its position as a key economic link between the Mekong Delta and Ho Chi Minh City, with a focus on enhancing transport connectivity, promoting industrial development, and boosting tourism. Looking ahead to 2050, the province envisions becoming a modern industrial province with a high quality of life, cultural heritage preservation, and well-developed infrastructure.
Tien Giang’s competitive edge lies in its natural and geographic advantages. It boasts 120 kilometres of riverbank along the north side of the Tien River, a 32-km coastline, and a network of rivers and canals that support a diverse range of ecosystems.
Located in the south, Tien Giang serves as a vital link between the Mekong Delta and the Southern Key Economic Zone, particularly Ho Chi Minh City and the southeast. The province’s proximity to major urban centres, just 70km from Ho Chi Minh City and 100km from Can Tho, positions it as an ideal location for businesses looking to connect raw materials, production sites, consumer markets, and export routes.
The province’s transport network, which includes the Ho Chi Minh City, Trung Luong, and My Thuan expressway and plans for the Ho Chi Minh City to Trung Luong railway, reinforces its status as a gateway between the Mekong Delta.
Known as a hub for rice, fruit, and seafood production, Tien Giang offers unique opportunities for businesses in the agricultural, marine, and processing sectors. Additionally, its cultural and historical heritage, traditional craft villages, and natural landscapes such as the Dong Thap Muoi eco-reserve make it a potential tourism hotspot. These natural advantages are complemented by its strategic location, which facilitates the transportation of goods between the Mekong Delta and Ho Chi Minh City, as well as other regions.
In terms of infrastructure, Tien Giang has already made significant progress. The province has been approved for the development of 11 industrial zones, three of which are currently operational: My Tho, Tan Huong, and Long Giang.
These zones are strategically located within areas of high economic potential and have attracted considerable interest from investors. The government’s focus on infrastructure development has also extended to improving social amenities and enhancing the overall quality of life for residents, boosting the province’s attractiveness to investors.
The province’s planning also identifies several key development areas. These include two industrial areas in the east and west of Tan Phuoc district, a riverside urban development belt along the Tien River from Cai Be to Go Cong Dong, and four major economic corridors.
The Trung Luong-My Thuan expressway, National Highway 1, and the planned National Highway 50B are set to play crucial roles in enhancing connectivity and opening up new investment opportunities.
In addition, Tien Giang has prioritised infrastructure development, administrative reforms, and the development of high-quality staff, aiming to create a favourable business environment and draw in both domestic and international investors.
Nguyen Van Vinh, Chairman of the Tien Giang People’s Committee, emphasised the importance of attracting more attention from central government ministries, international organisations, and neighbouring provinces. He called for greater investment to unlock the full potential of Tien Giang’s economy, stating that the provincial leadership is committed to creating a transparent and equitable investment environment, ensuring that businesses and investors have the opportunity to contribute to the province’s development.
