Police in central Vietnam detain two Russians for stealing money from ATMs

Police in the central province of Khanh Hoa have arrested two Russian men for using fake ATM cards to steal money from many ATMs in the coastal city of Nha Trang.

The police on Tuesday night detained Troian Aleksei, 32, after catching the foreign man red-handed using a fake ATM card to withdraw money at a branch of the Banks for Investment and Development of Vietnam on Ngo Gia Tu Street.

The police then found Troian carrying 14 ATM cards and VND24 million along, and then collected 216 ATM cards, VND61 million and over US$1,200 following a search at the hotel where the Russian man was staying.

Initially, Troian confessed using those fake ATMs card to withdraw money from BIDV and Techcombank.

Also in on Tuesday night, the police of Khanh Hoa province arrested Viacheslav Kotets, 29, for committing a similar crime of stealing money from many ATMs on Monday and Tuesday.

Police said they seized 25 ATM cards, over 15,900 euro and nearly VND25 million from Kotets.

According to news website VnExpress, Aleksei told the police that and Kotets was his accomplice, and they have entered Vietnam recently to steal money from ATMs using fake ATM cards supplied bya foreign man who will receive half of the money they had successfully stolen.

Aleksei told the police the two men have withdrawn hundreds of millions of Vietnamese dong by those counterfeit cards, VnExpressreported.

The police have launched further investigation into the case.
