The UK Visa Application Centre opened in HCMC on Thursday, allowing applicants to obtain UK visa in the city, instead of Hanoi.

The opening of the new facility is a joint effort of the British Embassy in Vietnam and VFS Global Co. To get a visa in HCMC, in addition to the visa fee required by the British government, each applicant has to pay an additional VND1.68 million.

Previously, those wanting to obtain UK visa could apply at the British Consulate General in HCMC but this service is no longer available, forcing applicants to submit their applications in Hanoi.

According to the British Embassy in Vietnam, the number of Vietnamese going to the UK for travel, study and business is on the rise, with 14,300 visas issued for Vietnamese last year, up 16per cent from the previous year.
