This pioneering underwater/submarine cable infrastructure will ensure a robust and reliable power supply to Con Dao Island from the mainland.
In tandem with expanding the existing 110kV transmission line at the Vinh Chau substation, the project also includes the establishment of a 110/22kV Con Dao substation, boasting a remarkable 2x63 MVA capacity and leveraging the advanced Gas Insulated Switchgear technology.
With a total investment of approximately VND5 trillion (around $212 million), the project will see close to equal funding from the central budget and Electricity of Vietnam (EVN). The project is scheduled for implementation from 2023 to 2026.
To execute the project, local authorities have been entrusted with executing comprehensive land clearance procedures, ensuring streamlined land utilisation while prudently conserving vital resources.
Investors are required to conduct environmental impact assessments and adhere to the relevant regulations. Strict monitoring will ensure the project progresses on schedule.
Furthermore, the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) will guide EVN in completing the project documentation, selecting appropriate conductor technologies, and insulation accessories to ensure safety and maximise the investment's effectiveness.
The decision grants the government authority to oversee the investment and management processes. Relevant ministries will provide guidance on land allocation, leasing, land use change permissions, and complete procedures for environmental impact assessment and coastal area allocation.
In a previous report to the government, the MoIT emphasised the project's economic and financial feasibility based on the aforementioned investment structure, asserting that it aligns with the government's development objectives for Con Dao.
Con Dao Island is currently grappling with electricity supply limitations that merely satisfy residential needs, markedly impeding its industrial, commercial, and tourism sectors. On-site diesel power sources are inadequate, exacerbating the situation with frequent outages and significantly hampering the potential of investment-oriented projects.
The implementation of the national grid power project is being seen as a step to improve the electricity supply to Con Dao, contributing to its development while fostering an alluring investment environment.
Government authorises undersea cables to power Con Dao Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha has consented to lay undersea cables from the mainland to Con Dao in order to supply the island with electricity. |
JETPs to power up a more efficient energy transition Just Energy Transition Partnerships are powerful tools for decarbonisation. They are becoming more popular because they bring key stakeholders together to enable a clean, fair energy transition in emerging economies that rely heavily on coal. |
