National Assembly deputies have reiterated the leading role of Vietnam Communist Party over the state and the society.

At last week’s plenary discussion on the draft amendment of the Constitution 1992, most National Assembly delegates agreed with Article 4 of the blueprint which highlights the Party’s leadership role.

“This provision [on the Party’s leadership] inherits the Constitution 1980 and Constitution 1992,” said Huynh The Ky, a National Assembly deputy  from Ninh Thuan province.

Truong Thi Thu Trang, a deputy from Tien Giang province underscored the big achievements brought about by the Party in the national history and said: “We have all groundwork to affirm that the Party is the sole one that can meet the people’s every immediate requirement in all revolutionary stages from the past till now and in the future. Thus the stipulation of the Party’s leadership in the draft amendment of the Constitution 1992 is a must.”

Other deputies agreed with Trang, recalling the great role the Party had played in Vietnam’s major milestones, including the August 1945 Revolution and national socio-economic development and international integration achievementsso far.

Delegate Le Van Lai from Quang Nam province said most constituents in the province affirmed the necessity of stipulating the leadership of the Party in the Constitution as this was the recognition and the historical mission of the Party over the past years.

Echoing this view, delegate Huynh Tuan Duong from Hai Duong province said the Party’s leadership was “a historic choice recognised by the people”  and “the people’s empowerment and credit to the Party.” He also said the stipulation was also “in line with international practices and conventions”.

Delegate Danh Ut from Kien Giang province also said that the affirmation of the Party’s leadership in the Constitution agreed with Vietnam’s practices.

“Article 4 means the Party is tasked to lead the country and the society. The Party is accountable to the people and subject to the people’s supervision,” Ut said.
