The Ministry of Industry and Trade is going to hold a conference on March 29 and 30 on APEC and the participation of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the textile and garment value chain.

At the conference, the ministry is going to share the result of a research on SMEs in the textiles and garment sector in China, Mexico, Indonesia, and some observations at North Vietnamese textiles and garment companies.

The conference aims to help the textiles and garment sector increase its benefits from the global value chain and propose policies to support companies in the field. It is expected to see the participation of between 30 and 40 textiles and garment companies from the north.

In Vietnam, the textiles and garment sector has now about 6,000 companies, mostly SMEs. In 2015, the sector’s export turnover was $27 billion, but import of materials amounted to $14 billion. According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Vietnam’s joining the Trans-Pacific Partnership is going to lead to an increase in export.
