Philippe Starck talking about his collaboration with Cassina over the past 20 years |
Philippe Starck has overseen 10,000 creations from furniture, smart thermostats, electric bikes, and wooden pre-built homes to multi-storey buildings in his native country of France and across the globe. The multifaceted inventiveness of Philippe Starck has always focused on the essential, his vision: that creation, whatever form it takes, must improve the lives of as many people as possible. This is why he is one of the pioneers and central figures of the concept of “democratic design.”
By applying his prolific work to all domains, products of daily life, architecture, as well as naval and spatial engineering, he has been continually pushing the horizons of design, becoming one of the leading visionaries and most renowned creators of the international contemporary scene.
His work is exhibited in the collections of European and American museums, including the Musée National d'Art Moderne, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, the MOMA, and the Brooklyn Museum in New York City, the Vitra Design Museum in Basel, and the Design Museum in London.
Philippe Starck has been honoured with more than 180 prizes and awards to acknowledge his great contribution to design and to honour the importance of creation to humanity.
During ‘The Other Conversation,’ Philippe Starck discussed his creative process, particularly for the projects with Cassina which birthed a series of living environments with sofas, chairs, stools, and beds, all revolving around the concept of elegant and timeless comfort.
About his design career, Philippe Starck said that he had a mission, a vision: that creation, whatever form it takes, must improve the lives of as many people as possible. Starck vehemently believes this poetic and political, rebellious and benevolent, pragmatic and subversive duty should be shared by everyone. He summed it up with the humour that had set him apart from the very beginning, “No one has to be a genius, but everyone has to participate.”
In the eyes of this accomplished citizen of the world, sharing his ethical and humanist vision of a moreequal planet is a duty that results in unconventional projects, bearing surprises. It is easy to guess his course of action: an object must be useful before being beautiful. “Whether it’s a toothbrush, an airplane or a chair, it’s always the same philosophy: to think about what the user will gain,” he said.
Philippe Starck also shared three famous collections namely My World, Privé, Volage EX-S, with pragmatic and intelligent design, his evolution of trademark capitonné quilted workmanship, and the high level of quality and aesthetics that have always distinguished the Cassina brand.
The Cassina showroom at Times Square Building features a series of living environments with sofas, chairs, stools, and beds by Philippe Starck, all founded on the concept of elegant and timeless comfort.
