Leaders extend sympathies to China over deadly quake

Hanoi - Vietnamese leaders sent condolence messages yesterday to their Chinese counterparts over the loss of human lives and damage to property in the recent earthquake in China's mountainous Yunnan province.

Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, President Truong Tan Sang, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung sent the messages to Chinese Party General Secretary and President Xi Jinping, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress Zhang Dejiang, respectively.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh also offered his condolences to Chinese State Councilor Yang Jiechi, Foreign Minister Wang Yi, and the Secretary of the Party Committee and the Governor of Yunnan province.

The 6.5-magnitude earthquake occurred on Sunday and has killed at least 398 people.
