IMF backs VN’s macro economic stabilization policy

General Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Christine Lagarde spoke highly of the Vietnamese government’s efforts in stabilising the macro economy and curbing inflation at her meeting with Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung in Washington on September 26 (local time).

The Vietnamese PM is in the US to attend the High-level Meetings of the 68 th Session of the United Nations General Assembly.

The IMF is willing to help Viet Nam in the field, thus creating a firm and stable macro-economic foundation to attract more FDI to the country for further development, the organization’s chief said. 
She encouraged Viet Nam to renovate the economic structure and develop the private sector, continue with reform in the economic sector while maintaining the current monetary policy and raising the effectiveness and profit of State-owned enterprises.

The IMF will continue to support Viet Nam in policy consulting, training and technical assistance, said the General Director, expressing her belief that Viet Nam will overcome macro economic challenges.  
 
PM Dung affirmed the increasingly important role of IMF in the global financial and monetary system, especially in supporting key economic areas to overcome the crisis.

He voiced his support of IMF’s efforts in providing loans for needed countries to cope with crisis while speaking highly of the organixation’s cooperation and assistance to Viet Nam ever since the country started its open-door policy.

The Vietnamese government is resolved to push ahead with economic restructuring with focus on renovating State-owned enterprises, public investment and banking system, PM Dung said.  
 
He also asked the IMF to continue working closely with Viet Nam in making assessment and policy recommendations regarding the macro economy and inflation control.

In an interview given to Viet Nam News Agency’s US-based correspondent after the meeting, Christine Lagarde said the policies implemented by the Vietnamese government are in line with IMF’s advice.

The IMF will continue to help Viet Nam via its yearly economic reports which recommend what should be done and polices to ensure economic growth and minimize the inflation, she said.

The same day, PM Dung left Washington for New York to attend the plenary session of the 68 th Session of the United Nations General Assembly.
