Hanoi welcomes APEC Senior Officials for second meeting

The second APEC Senior Officials’ Meeting (SOM 2) and related meetings officially opened in Hanoi on May 9.

The APEC 2017 National Committee said that there are about 2,000 delegates from all over the world participating in the APEC’s events from May 9 to May 21.

During this period, a wide range of important events will take place at the National Convention Centre My Dinh in Hanoi, including the SOM 2, the High-Level Policy Dialogue on Human Resource Development in the Digital Age and related meetings, Multilateral Dialogue on APEC towards 2020 and the Future, and the 23th Ministers Responsible for Trade Meeting (MRT).

The events in Hanoi are expected to comprise of 40 meetings and seminars of committees and working groups.

The May 9 schedule consisted of the 11th meeting of the Mining Task Force (MTF11), a meeting of the Sub-Committee on Standards and Conformances (SCSC), the establishment of the Food Safety Cooperation Forum (FSCF), and the Partnership Training Institute Network (PTIN), and an export certificate workshop, among others. Besides, there were meetings of the Group of Friends on Disability (GoFD) and the Policy Partnership on Women and the Economy (PPWE).

These meetings play an important role in defining the priority of APEC 2017. Besides, they also serve as the groundwork to prepare the content of the documents that will be submitted to world leaders and APEC’s ministers for approval at the APEC Summit in November in Danang.

On this occasion, seven Vietnamese ministries, including the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Planning and Investment, the Ministry of Labour-Invalids and Social Affairs, Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Construction, and the Ministry of Science and Technology, will directly host or be the chairmen and vice-chairmen of the committees and working groups of APEC 2017.

The 2,000 delegates participating in APEC meetings in Hanoi include ministers responsible for trade and human resources development in APEC member economies, the senior officials of the 21 economies in APEC, as well as the representatives of the APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC) and the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council.

Besides, the ASEAN Secretariat, leading experts from international organisations and leaders of large research institutes will also attend SOM 2.

The APEC was established in 1989, and currently has 21 member economies, accounting for 39 per cent of the world’s population, 59 per cent of its GDP, and 48 per cent of global commerce, according to November 2016 statistics.
