Hanoi to start $2 million CNN popularity campaign

Hanoi will spend a pretty big sum of $2 million on a media campaign on CNN channel to promote the capital’s image as a favourable tourism and investment destination.

This was announced at the event themed "Meetings and Business Dialogue" held in Hanoi on November 28.

Nguyen Duc Chung, Chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee, said that the capital and CNN completed negotiations for a two-year administrative programme starting on January 1, 2017. The programme is implemented in the context of attracting international visitors as well as foreign direct investment (FDI) capital to Hanoi has yet to be commensurate with the city’s potential.

According to Chung, the Hanoi Investment Promotion Centre’s promotion programmes, especially sending enterprises to participate in trade fairs abroad, have yet to yield the expected results.

Regarding attracting FDI, in ten months, Hanoi attracted 445 FDI projects with the total registered capital of $2.8 billion.Most of the capital went into big projects in prioritised or key fields, including Samsung Development and Research Centre ($300 million) and Duong River Surface Water Treatment Plant ($227 million).

However, in term of the Provincial Competitiveness Index (PCI), although Hanoi’s PCI jumped two steps to 24th compared to the previous year, it has yet to fight its way amongst the top ten cities and provinces.

According to the statistics published by the Hanoi Department of Tourism, nearly 3.2 million foreign tourists visited Hanoi in the ten months of this year, up 23 per cent on-year. Almost all visitors came from China, South Korea, Japan, Australia, France, the US, Germany, and Thailand.

Foreign arrivals to Hanoi are expected to reach nearly four million this year, up 22.6 per cent on-year.
