In May some 400 hectares of corals, or around a fifth of the reefs around the island, were bleached white and died because of the sea’s unusually warm temperature due to El Nino.

Coral reefs have an important role to play in the marine eco-system by preserving the environment, enabling bio-diversity and preventing erosion.

The park management has instituted a project to resurrect the bleached corals, which is expected to begin early next year.
