President Sang visits the Mong Duong II BOT Power Project

Today, Vietnam's President Truong Tan Sang, accompanied by the Quang Ninh Communist Party Secretary Pham Minh Chinh visited the Mong Duong II BOT Power Project - the first and largest build-operate-transfer (BOT) coal-fired power project in Vietnam.

At the Mong Duong II BOT Power Project site, managing director of the AES-VCM Mong Duong Power Company Limited David Stone, reported to President Sang on the project's progress as well as several key milestones which have recently been completed including the synchronisation of Unit 1 to the 500kV national grid and the achievement of full load on Unit 1 of 560 net MW.  

During the visit, President Sang praised the excellent progress that has been achieved and voiced his appreciation for the company’s efforts to carry out this project safely, efficiently and with the highest quality. He highlighted the importance of the Mong Duong II BOT Power Project’s significant contribution to Vietnam’s energy sector which will enable Vietnam to meet the forecasted energy demands of a fast growing economy. He also visited directly with the entire workforce and provided appreciation gifts to top performers.

The Mong Duong II BOT Power  Project, with two units and the total gross capacity of 1,240 MW is currently under construction in Mong Duong ward, Cam Pha City, Quang Ninh province. The total investment for the project is approximately $2 billion. The project owner is AES-VCM Mong Duong Power Company Limited with three shareholders from the subsidiaries of  AES Corporation (51 per cent), POSCO Energy (30) and C IC (19).

The Mong Duong II BOT Power Project continues to progress very well with an average of 5 ,500 people working on the project every day, in which over 5,000 people are local Vietnamese, with nearly 36  million man-hours completed.

After completion of construction and commissioning activities in the second half of 2015, the Mong Duong II BOT Power P roject is forecasted to produce  over 7 .6 billion kWh of electricity annually.
