The Ho Chi Minh City firm was set up on May 19, 1993 as a joint venture between Taiwanese company Central Trading & Development and Tan Thuan Industrial Promotion Company, which represents the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee.
Founded by Lawrence S. Ting, Phu My Hung was responsible for master-planning the 3,300 hectare Saigon South urban expansion plan, that created the southward expansion option for the mega-city. Phu My Hung town covers 433ha.
A master plan competition was held in July 1993. Subsequently a consortium made up of Skidmore Owings & Merrill, Koetter Kim & Associates and Japan’s Kenzo Tange was formed. The master plan was the first Asian urban plan to win an American Institute of Architect honour award for the best urban design in 1997.
The company has developed a mangrove region into a modern and prosperous urban area within 20 years. The new urban area is a successful project and symbol of Vietnam’s investment attracting policy in the doi moi period.
At the anniversary ceremony in the city, various individual executives of the company were granted Vietnamese State Orders, merit certificates from Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee.
