The ao dai presented to APEC leaders at the 2006 APEC Summit in Hanoi |
This was announced by Huynh Vinh Ai, Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism and deputy chief of the Subcommittee on Media and Culture of the National Committee for the APEC Vietnam 2017, at a press conference this morning, according to newswire Vietnamnet.
“The costume for APEC leaders this year is not the traditional Vietnamese ao dai. This dress is short, with long sleeves and a split back with two colours: the ivory white of the silk and the blue representing the love of peace. Besides, the buttons will have the APEC logo on them,” Ai said.
Furthermore, the boxes for these costumes are made of Vietnamese bamboo with a lotus pattern inspired by the lotus of Thang Long, Hanoi.
This is the second time that Vietnam has hosted APEC events and leading local fashion designers were invited to submit their ideas, a process which began as early as last year.
At the 2006 APEC Summit held in Vietnam, APEC leaders wore a traditional Vietnamese dress made from silk with lotus patterns.
