The Vietnamese government is going to keep the previously set target of economic growth at 6.7 per cent in 2016.

Speaking at a working session with the Ministry of Planning and Investment (MPI), Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc said that he was not going to propose adjusting the target GDP growth rate, despite the fact that growth over the first quarter of 2016 was 5.46 per cent, lower than the 6.12 per cent in the same period last year.

The PM chose the MPI to be his first working visit destination right after he assumed the post.

Minister of Planning and Investment Nguyen Chi Dung said, besides regular activities, such as reporting on economic growth, the ministry would focus on building important marco-economic policies such as the Law on Master Planning, the Law to Support Small and Medium Enterprises, and other necessary documents related to the market economy mechanism this year.

Phuc said he highly regarded the role of the ministry in suggesting macro-economic policies and asked the ministry to continue eliminating barriers to doing business, propose new models, such as special economic zones. It should also build confidence and policies to boost private sector growth, supervise public spending, and push the restructuring of state-owned enterprises.

“The most important thing is maintaining macroeconomic stability and ensuring a reasonable level of inflation,” he said.
