EVN delegation explores leading HSE practices at Coo Pumped Storage Plant in Belgium

EVN has sent 15 of its staff members to Coo Pumped Storage Plant (PSP) located in Belgium. The learning initiative was made possible through the support of the French Development Agency (AFD) and the EU and was organised by a consortium including Tractebel Engineering France and Bureau Veritas Vietnam.

The primary aim is to glean insight and best practices from the operational methodologies employed at the Coo PSP and also at the Bevercé Hydropower Plant. Led by HSE and hydropower experts from Tractebel Engineering, the study tour offers a holistic understanding of global HSE implementation at hydropower plants.

Both plants are operated by Paris-based multinational utilities company ENGIE and play key roles in Belgium's energy mix. Coo PSP offers flexibility amid the current energy transition with a maximum capacity of 1,080MW.

The EVN delegation learned about the ongoing projects to increase power at Coo PSP. By next year, Coo PSP will have increased its reservoir storage capacity, resulting in an additional 79MW of power generation and a 450MWh storage boost since 2021.

The visit also provided insight into operational challenges related to HSE in hydroelectric power plants, covering a range of topics such as equipment maintenance, team organisation, risk assessment, daily HSE operations, and interactions with contractors and subcontractors.

During the visit, the delegation participated in in-depth discussions on project nuances. They observed effective safety protocol implementation adhering to global HSE standards, ensuring a secure working environment during ongoing plant operations, and new construction activities.

This study tour represents a significant stride forward for EVN, the AFD, and the consortium of consulting partners, in championing HSE standards and sustainable operational practices.
