More than 1,000 volunteers spent the whole of Sunday December 1 at the Sunwah and Friends Social Services Day in Ho Chi Minh City to serve 11 community projects.

The participants included higher education students receiving Sunwah Foundation scholarships, as well as fellow students from more than 20 universities, employees of the Hong Kong company, its business partners, and tenants of the Sunwah Tower.

The event was aimed at raising awareness of the benefits of social service activities and promoting the idea that working together boosts these activities, said Sunwah Group and Sunwah Foundation chairman Dr. Jonathan Choi.

Of 11 projects, the first was lectures and workshops by international experts at Hoa Sen University. The second was cleaning the homes of families of fallen soldiers who were also given gifts.

A third project was cycling for awareness where students biked around the city to promote UNICEF’s child assistance efforts, traffic safety and environmental awareness. Project four was volunteers preparing and delivering food to the needy and sick. The fifth project promoted public cleanliness and anti-littering by splitting into groups to clean public areas.

Project 6 was called Paint Positive and volunteers helped beautify playrooms and playgrounds for children. As for the other five projects, volunteers supported orphanages by donatin blankets, warm clothes, toys, and books to the needy in Central Highlands’ province Dak Nong. They also planted trees at the University of Economics in Ho Chi Minh City.

Vietnamese deputy minister of education Nguyen Vinh Hien, who joined the day, said that since its establishment five years ago, the Sunwah foundation has organized numerous community activities to support education and training in Vietnam, assisted disabled and disadvantaged children, helped train teachers of English and Chinese, and provided scholarships for Vietnamese to study in Hong Kong.

Sunday’s event also marked the fifth anniversary of Sunwah Foundation in Vietnam.
