With safety in the operating room as one of the top priorities, VietMedical organised a training course with focus on the safe handling of electric scalpels for nearly 100 nurses from ten major hospitals in Hanoi.
The operating room nurse is the right hand of a surgeon. During the surgical procedure, these nurses prepare surgical instruments for the operation and monitor the procedure to provide correct surgical instruments and assistance to the surgeon when necessary. The job requires strong professional knowledge and proficient use of surgical instruments.
Scalpel is an indispensable tool in surgical procedure. According to Dr. William Halsted, a rare authority on modern medicine, there are five principles to heal surgical incision best, which are: good hemostasis, minimised damage to tissues, good preservation of blood supply, strict asepsis, minimum tension of tissues. The selection and use of the right scalpel can affect the first three principles: hemostasis, tissues handling, and blood supply.
Different types of scalpels work differently and have different effect on tissues, thus the selection of the appropriate scalpel is one of the factors in a successful surgery. Electric scalpels are widely used in the operating rooms of all hospitals thanks to their advantages, such as effective cutting and cauterising and rapid hemostasis. However, there are still accidents resulting in burns to the patients or medical staff, thus good understanding and application of safe practices when using electric scalpels will help ensure safety during operations.
At the training session, Nguyen Thu Huong, in charge of the operating room equipment sector of Medtronic, a leading provider of healthcare solutions, shared useful information on safety in the operating room, and especially the safe usage of electric scalpels. Operating nurses at the training session also had the opportunity to share and exchange related information and practices with Medtronic’s modern medical equipment.
Speaking about this event, Nguyen Thu Nam, PhD, MD, director of training and product application at VietMedical, said: “We understand the importance of balance between developing human resources and upgrading facilities and equipment in the healthcare sector, therefore apart from high-quality medical products and services, we also pay attention to the training of the medical staff. This training session is part of VietMedical’s efforts to develop alongside the healthcare sector.”
