German-invested Siemens Group has stepped up energy efficiency at production facilities worldwide in a pilot scheme aimed at greening the enterprise.

The company has developed a comprehensive energy efficiency programme and successfully deployed it in more than 20 of its locations over the last year. It is now touting the programme to companies around the globe.

A Siemens media release stated that the pilot programme had helped save €5.5 million on energy bills annually reduced carbon dioxide emissions by over 18,000 metric tonnes. After conclusion of the pilot phase, the programme will be offered to external customers. A public debut will take place at Light+Building on April 15–20, 2012 in Frankfurt.

Environmental protection, energy efficiency and optimised use of resources are important aspects of efficient and sustainable production. Using available energy efficiently offers the best potential for protecting resources and lowering costs. To increase energy efficiency, many companies rely on isolated measures, which, unfortunately, leave most of the existing savings potential untapped.

This programme has avoided that risk by following a standardised approach: As a first step, energy experts from the Siemens Building Technologies Division perform a thorough analysis of production locations to determine the energy consumption and associated environmental impact.

The resulting report identifies the location’s energy savings potential. The second step is to turn this systematic assessment into a comprehensive customised package of improvement measures. After the measures have been implemented, continuous monitoring by a Siemens Advantage Operation Centre ensures the availability and ongoing optimisation of the systems, thus maintaining and refining the energy efficiency level that has been achieved.

“Companies opting for the programme will see many benefits, including increased energy efficiency, reduced operating costs and a short payback period. In addition, energy performance contracting makes it possible to finance the required investments through guaranteed savings in energy and operating costs. The programme is scalable to companies of any size,” said the release.

The services included in the programme are part of Siemens’ Environmental Portfolio. In fiscal 2011, revenue from the Portfolio totalled about €30 billion, making Siemens one of the world’s largest suppliers of eco-friendly technologies.

“In the same period, our products and solutions enabled customers to reduce their CO2 emissions by nearly 320 million tonnes, an amount equal to the total annual CO2 emissions of Berlin, Delhi, Hong Kong, Istanbul, London, New York, Singapore and Tokyo,” the release said.
