In a photo posted on his official Facebook page on Thursday, two days after the retired English football (soccer) player left the Southeast Asian country after a brief visit, Beckham expressed his concern about how careless a fan was when she was apparently trying to photograph him.
The woman was shown driving her scooter with one hand – while her kid was standing and sleeping with his head buried between the mother’s thighs – and capturing the famous footballer with a smartphone on her left hand.
The photo has generated more than 626,000 likes and 6,580 shares as of Saturday morning.
The driver was not wearing the compulsory crash helmet as per Vietnamese traffic law, and her eyes were all on the ex-Manchester United winger instead of focusing on the road.
“I’m all for fans taking a picture but not sure this is the safest way to do it!” Beckham captioned his viral photo.
The photo has been reposted by many Vietnamese-language newswires shortly after it surfaced. Thousands of Facebook users, both foreigners and Vietnamese, have also commented below the photo, expressing their outrage at the negligence and carelessness of the woman.
“There is a child between her legs!” many comments shared the same shock over the picture.
After the photo went viral in Vietnamese media, local netizens have found the Facebook page believed to belong to the woman, who has been identified as V. K. Lien residing in Hanoi.
Lien also posted some photos showing Beckham sitting in a car, saying she only shot the photos after realizing she was photographed by the Englishman.
“So I was riding my son, who fell asleep and had his cheek on my lap, when I heard the warning horn from a motorcade. Then the window of the car running next to me suddenly opened, which startled my child, and I was thinking I had driven in the wrong lane. Even more shocking, I then realized it was Beckham who was pointing his camera at the child,” the woman wrote on her Facebook on Monday.
“So I was shooting back some photos to appear polite. So embarrassing.”
Many Facebook users have cast doubt on her story, and criticizing the woman for breaching traffic law, which is driving without a helmet while using cellphones.
Others said Beckham might have been intrigued by the way the child slept on the scooter so he decided to take a photo of it.
Beckham was visiting Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City on Monday and Tuesday to promote an alcoholic drink brand, a trip that is estimated to cost no less than VND1 billion (roughly $50,000).
