According to Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Tran Tuan Anh, the project at block was a key component of Vietnam’s energy sector. The recognition of a decade of safe operations, he said, reflectws the professionalism and safety compliance by the operator.
Block 06.1, which consists of Lan Tay and Lan Do natural gas fields, is located 370km offshore southeast of Ba Ria-Vung Tau province in Vietnam.
“As operator, we feel pride that every day over the last 10 years, every member of our team has arrived home safely to their loved ones, and to have made a material contribution to Vietnam’s domestic energy needs,” said Hugh McIntosh, TNK Vietnam general director.
Discoveries of the two gas fields in 1992 and 1993 were the foundation to Vietnam’s first foreign-invested gas project, which is jointly owned by TNK Vietnam with 35 per cent, ONGC 45 per cent, and PVEP 20 per cent.
Since production started in Lan Tay Platform in November 2002, block 06.1 has safely and reliably produced 37 billion cubic metres of gas and 13 million barrels of condensate to meet around 22 per cent of Vietnam’s electricity generation, according to the statement released by TNK Vietnam.
The project has successfully gone through three phases of Lan Tay development, achieving a capacity of 16 million cubic metres of gas per day while maintaining high safety standards.
On this occasion, block 06.1’s investors also welcomed first gas production from Lan Do field, which came on stream in October 2012 after two years of construction and testing. Lan Do development, the last phase of the Nam Con Son Project, is aimed to extend the block’s production plateau and extend its role as the largest gas producer in Vietnam.
Lan Do field has two vertical sub-sea wells in a water depth of 185 metres and tied back to Lan Tay Platform via 28 kilometres of 12-inch flow line and umbilical, enabling gas treatment and transportation from the existing Lan Tay infrastructure.
The project was delivered without any lost time incidents, on time, and within budget.
“Lan Do is the first offshore field development project in the past 10 years for the team in Vietnam, and the first ever for TNK-BP Group. We are honored to mark this significant milestone for our operations in Vietnam, and to remain a substantial gas producer in the country,” said McIntosh.
TNK Vietnam is part of TNK-BP Group, a 50/50 joint venture between BP of the UK and the AAR (Alfa Group/Access Industries/Renova) consortium of Russia. TNK Vietnam is involved in oil and gas exploration and production and entered Vietnam through the acquisition of BP’s upstream assets in October 2010.
TNK Vietnam officially received its investment licence in October 2011 and became equity owner and operator of block 06.1.
