These surgeries not only allow children to urinate normally, without pain or shame but also let them lead normal and fulfilling lives. The total amount required is VND1.8 billion. This amount will cover surgery and all logistical costs including families for 32 children, increasing the total number of treated children to date to 106. All surgeries will be performed by surgeons from Italy and the US.
The teams of all-volunteer surgeons from Italy and America have performed life-changing genital surgeries on 106 boys and girls from needy families all over Vietnam. This June, these teams return to Vietnam for their 6th mission, and will operate on 32 more children. Accordingly from June 12 – 21, 2014, the medical team will operate on nine children and examine 40 others for future surgery, and hold a workshop-training seminar at Danang Hospital for Women and Children.
The team intends to supply specialised medical equipment and tools (including Pediatric Operating Cysto-Urethroscopes, Grasp forceps and Biospy forceps) for the hospital. They will also cover all costs and travel for patients’ families. From there, the medical team will travel to Ho Chi Minh City to perform 14 surgeries at Children’s Hospital No. 2 from June 22 – 29. During this time, another 21 children will be evaluated. The final surgeries will take place in Hanoi at the National Hospital of Pediatrics from June 30 – July 4, where nine patients will undergo operations, and a further 39 examined for surgery next year.
Without the dedication of these volunteer surgeons from overseas, volunteer staff, the local authorities and especially the financial support from generous donors, this programme would not be possible. Since the beginning of June 2014, the mission has received VND920 million from everyday Vietnamese citizens and business people from Vietnam, Singapore, the US, and even the support of the Italian Embassy in Hanoi. However, VND800 million is still required, in order to cover all surgery and project costs.
