PM Dung appreciated WB’s support to the country in many fields, including poverty reduction, sustainable development, environmental protection and response to climate change and sea level rise.
He highlighted two major challenges to the country, which were decisive to the country’s sustainable development. Firstly, Viet Nam is one of nations most affected by climate change and sea level rise, particularly in the Mekong Delta region. Secondly,the country is dependent on water resources from other countries, particularly from the Mekong River.
PM Dung expressed his hope that the WB would continue to support Viet Nam and regional countries to use water resources from the Mekong River sustainably and effectively.
He stressed that Viet Nam committed to working closely with the WB and other global efforts to address the challenges effectively as climate change and sea level rise were not only the country’s problems, but also global issues requiring the whole world to join hands to resolve.
For her part, Kyte said that climate change hindered development capacity and prosperity of many nations, so that the WB strongly committed to be Viet Nam’s partner as the country has shown its vision in addressing climate change’s challenges.
The WB pledged to provide Viet Nam with financial and technical support, knowledge and experience while coordinating global efforts to help the country cope with climate change and sea level rise, Kyte said.
The WB and other development partners supported and committed to sponsoring the country’s plans and programs, hoping that Viet Nam would have a list of feasible projects and resolute measures to realize practical plans in the future, she added.
Regarding the effective and sustainable use of Mekong River water resources, the WB official stated that the WB Group will co-ordinate with global efforts to facilitate regional dialogues on the use of Mekong River resources, saying that the bank is willing to support regional efforts and become a strategic partner of regional countries to join hands in addressing these crucial issues.
