Vietnam's outbound investments reached $136.07 million in the first five months of this year, according to the latest statistics from the Ministry of Planning and Investment.

Vietnamese businesses invested in 42 new overseas projects and made 10 capital adjustments to ongoing ventures in the first five months of 2024, totalling$136.07 million and equal to 43 per cent of the figure posted in the same period last year.

From January-May, Vietnamese businesses invested in 16 industries. The majority of investment was concentrated in the mining sector, accounting for 43.1 per cent of the total. That was followed by the manufacturing and processing industry (23.9 per cent), and trading and retail (8.3 per cent).

Sixteen countries and territories were the recipients of the Vietnamese outbound investments in the first five months of 2024. Among them, the Netherlands took the lead, accounting for 40.1 per cent of the total. Laos came in second, holding 36.8 per cent, followed by the US (5.6 per cent), and New Zealand (4.3 per cent).

As of May 20, Vietnam has had 1,733 valid overseas ventures valued at $22.25 billion. Among them, 31.6 per cent of outbound investments have flown into the mining sector, while 15.6 per cent of the sum is in the agro-forestry-fishery sector. Laos is the largest recipient of Vietnamese overseas investments (24.8 per cent), with Cambodia second at 13.1 per cent, and Venezuela third with 8.2 per cent.
