The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has presented a humanitarian award to National Assembly (NA) Vice Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan for her contributions to the country’s efforts in child mortality rate reduction.

In her speech at a February 27 award handover ceremony in Hanoi, Ngan praised the assistance given by UNICEF to improve child care and protection in Vietnam.

Ngan said she hopes the fund will further enhance its important role in coordinating with other UN organizations to continue its support for Vietnam in the field.

Vietnam always places the importance on caring for and protecting children, considering this one of its major policies.

The country has recorded the significant achievements in ensuring the rights of children over the years and its child mortality rate fell to 16 percent in 2010 from 36.7 percent in 2000, she noted.

UNICEF Chief Representative in Vietnam Lotta Sylwander applauded the NA Vice Chairwoman for her contributions to promoting the enforcement of the rights of the child over the past time, expressing her hope that Ngan will make greater contributions to the sphere in the future.
