Government greenlights wind power imports from Laos

He has assigned the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) to direct Vietnam Electricity (EVN) and relevant agencies to negotiate and sign a power purchase agreement to ensure a complete legal basis and economic efficiency, technical criteria for power security, and clearly defining the responsibilities of relevant parties in accordance with the law.

The proposal was submitted by the MoIT to the prime minister, outlining electricity imports from the Truong Son wind power plant in Laos, which has a capacity of 250MW. At the same time, a 220kV double-circuit transmission line will be added to the plan along with conductors and a transformer station to carry the electricity from Laos.

The investor of the Truong Son wind power plant will finance the connection of the plant to Vietnamese territory and put the project into operation in the fourth quarter of 2025.

The investor had earlier offered a selling price of 6.95 cents per kWh for commercial operations commencing before December 31, 2025.

According to the MoIT, electricity imports from the Truong Son wind power plant are essential to supplementing current sources, helping to ease potential power shortages in Vietnam in the coming years.

EVN evaluated that importing electricity from Laos, particularly wind power, will help reduce electricity expenses, while ensuring stable power supplies in northern Vietnam.
