South African Consulate brings warm houses to underprivileged soldiers

On December 17, Do Thi Kim Lien, South African Consul in Ho Chi Minh City granted VND700 million ($31,818) to build 10 houses for families of poor soldiers of the Vietnam People's Navy.

The third season of "Spring in Remote Islands" collected over $681,800 for charity

Lien was one of the people and organisations to contribute over VND15 billion ($681,800) to help residents, officers, and soldiers who are constantly protecting the sovereignty of the country’s islands and seas.

The activity was held as part of the third season of "Spring in Remote Islands" by the Central Committee of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union (HCYU), the Club "For Our Dear Paracel and Spatly Islands" and Vu A Dinh Scholarship Fund. The event attracted the participation of State Deputy President Dang Thi Ngoc Thinh and First Secretary of HCYU Central Committee Le Quoc Phong.

The Club "For Our Dear Paracel and Spatly Islands" was founded three years ago and now has over 80 groups and thousands of individual members at the moment.

The club has so far raised almost VND22 billion ($969,150), offered nearly 5,000 scholarships to children of navy soldiers and poor fishermen, financed 62 students with disadvantaged backgrounds while transferring them to Ho Chi Minh City for further learning, and built 12 houses of gratitude.

Over the past years, Lien and the South African Consulate in Ho Chi Minh City has co-operated with many units to organise charitable activities to support the families of martyrs and underprivileged people and students across the country.

Most recently, Lien and others also presented 3,000 sets of warm clothes, boots, and woollen caps for nearly 3,000 children and teachers in the villages of the northern mountainous province of Lai Chau.
