Vietnamese goods promoted in German Metro

A ceremony to highlight the special week featuring Vietnamese goods was held at Metro supermarket in Berlin on May 31.

When addressing the event, the General Director of the Metro Group, Frans W. H. Muller underlined the potential of Vietnam ’s goods and its market.

Muller said that since entering Vietnam in 2002, Metro has opened 17 supermarkets and will soon open an additional three, raising its total investment in the country to 250 million EUR.

Metro has liaised closely with the Vietnamese Government and local authorities to build shopping centres across the country and supply quality goods for Metro to sell in Vietnam as well as for export, he said.

Many Vietnamese goods such as tra and basa fish hold a strong position in the German and EU markets, Muller noted.

On May 31, Vietnamese Goods Week officially got underway in 117 Metro shops across Germany .

The Deputy Minister for Industry and Trade, Ho Thi Kim Thoa, said that German-Vietnamese ties have been raised to a strategic relationship and in 2011 two-way trade totalled 5.5 billion USD.

Vietnam wants its products exported worldwide through Metro’s 750 supermarkets, she said, adding that by doing this, Vietnamese producers can get a better idea of consumers’ tastes and improve their products accordingly. The country could also increase its market share in Europe and through Metro’s chain of supermarkets across the continent.

Germanys Secretary of State for Economics, Technology and Research Christoph von Knobelsdorff praised the disciplined and hardworking Vietnamese people that live in Germany, especially the Vietnamese students who were chosen to work for German companies and agencies.
