National Judo Championships opens in Gia Lai

More than 250 martial artists from 23 cities and provinces across the country are attending the 2011 National Judo Championships in the highland province of Gia Lai from August 8-14.

The event is jointly held by the Gia Lai provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the General Department of Sports and Physical Training and the Vietnam Judo Association.

Judokas are competing for 18 sets of medals in Kumite (combat) and Kata (performance) events.

In the 2010 Judo Championships the Gia Lai team won 3 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze medals, placed four in the medal tally.

Nguyen Ngoc Minh, Deputy Head of the Gia Lai provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, said that Judo is considered one of the province’s key sports and Gia Lai is expected to finish third this time.

The province’s is putting high hope on the queen of Judo, Van Ngoc Tu.
