National Assembly elects new Vice President, top judicial officials

The National Assembly (NA) elected the new Vice President, Chief Justice of the Supreme People’s Court and Prosecutor General of the Supreme People’s Procuracy this morning.

Đặng Thị Ngọc Thịnh won 450 votes, or 91.09 per cent of the total NA deputies, and became the new Vice President.

She is currently a member of the Party Central Committee, deputy chief of the Party Central Committee’s Office and also a lawmaker.

Born on December 25, 1959, in the central province of Quảng Nam, Thịnh is a bachelor of law, history and political theory and holds a master’s degree in Party building.

She used to be the Vice Permanent President of the Vietnam Women’s Union, Secretary of the Vĩnh Long provincial Party Committee, an alternate member of the 10th Party Central Committee, a member of the Party Central Committee in the 11th and 12th tenures, and a NA deputy in the 11th and 13th tenures.

With the support of 472 deputies (or 95.5 percent of the total), Nguyễn Hòa Bình, a Secretary of the Party Central Committee and a NA deputy, was elected the Chief Justice of the Supreme People’s Court.

Lê Minh Trí, a Party Central Committee member and Vice Chairman of the Party Central Committee’s Commission for Internal Affairs, was named the Prosecutor General of the Supreme People’s Procuracy with 316 votes in favour (or 63.97 per cent).

The parliament also passed separate resolutions on the elections of the Vice President, the Chief Justice and the Prosecutor General with respective approval rates of 94.74 per cent, 90.49 per cent and 76.11 per cent.
