Vietnamese player Nguyen Tien Minh narrowly beat underdog World No. 75 Iskandar Zulkarnain from Malaysia 2-1 in his first match of the Yonex Australian Badminton Open on April 4.

Although unexpectedly losing 17-21 to the Malaysian rival in the first set Minh soon gained the upper hand to finish the second set 21-9 and the third 21-8, respectively.

He is scheduled to play the host Michell Wheller in the following round.

The Australian Open, taking place in Sydney from April 2-7 under the Grand Prix Gold series, has a total cash prize of $120,000.

Minh (World No.9) is placed second at the tournament only after Lee Chong Wei (World No.1) from Malaysia.
