The Mekong Delta province of An Giang opened a rural tourist centre on February 14 as part of an agri-tourism project funded by the Dutch farmers association, Agriterra.

The centre, which will help to maintain the project’s sustainability, will facilitate all ongoing agri-tourism activities. The An Giang farmers union was the most successful out of the three provinces involved in this project, which began in 2007.

The second phase of the project, from 2011-2014, will cost a total of over 676,000 EUR, to which Agriterra contributed more than 328,000 EUR.

Fifteen communes in An Giang will be involved in the project, which will offer tourists the chance to take part in a range of community activities. They can experience local culture at first hand on a home stay visit where they will also dine with farming households.

During the first phase, the project helped the province to establish new tourist sites in My Hoa Hung, Van Giao and Tan Trung communes, which created a new and exciting business model for local people.
