44th ADB Annual Meeting to open tomorrow

The 44th Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors of the Asian Development Bank will officially open at the National Convention Center in Hanoi on May 3, said Governor of State Bank of Vietnam Nguyen Van Giau at a press briefing on Sunday.

The event takes place at special time as Vietnam has officially joined the middle income country group after 25 years of renovation.

Vietnam has made important socio-economic achievements, especially in poverty reduction, an area which received a special attention from the ADB and being regarded as the key mandate of this multi-lateral development organization.

Among 3,600 local and foreign delegates to this year’s meeting, there will be government leaders, governors of central banks, economic and finance ministers from 67 ADB member countries and territories.

Representatives from international financial institutions, private sector of world-leading financial groups and multi-national corporations, research institutions, non-governmental organizations as well as the national and foreign media will also participate in this annual meeting.

The 44th ADB annual meeting serves as a platform for discussion on a series of big issues such as food security, avoiding the middle-income trap, growth models, dealing with the surging inflows of hot money, infrastructure development, sustainable and green development, climate change, and others.

Vietnamese PM Nguyen Tan Dung will join the meeting and deliver a keynote speech.

Governor Giau emphasizes that “the robust economic growth in Asia, especially after the recent global financial crisis, is obviously an evidence for a dynamic Asia. The remarkable recovery of the region mostly reflects the successful reforms and restructuring which have been implemented since the 1997-1998 crisis.”

"The strong collaboration has helped the region to deal effectively with the crisis, giving us more confidence in our joint efforts  toward a steady, sustainable and fair global development, as well as the attainment of the Millennium Development Goals," he added.

On the sidelines of the 44th annual meeting, there will be approximately 20 seminars and country presentations, among those, remarkable seminar on “Asia 2050” will focus on discussing on what the region must do over the next 40 years to sustain the momentum of its remarkable growth in recent decades.

A special event that highlights the “Vietnam landmark” at this year annual meeting is the “Vietnam Day Program”, according to which there will be a senior business meeting with the participation of Vietnam’s Deputy PM, Ministers, and international speakers.

In addition, seminars and cultural events to introduce investment, trade and tourism opportunities in Vietnam as well as about the history and traditions of the country will be held.

The 44th ADB annual meeting is an opportunity for Vietnam to promote the image of a history and culture-rich country, an emerging and dynamic economy with increasing influence in the region, as assessed by ADB President Haruhiko Kuroda: “Vietnam is a very strong partner in the region’s development.”
