Indian firm to build Mekong power plant

The Tata Power Group from India has proposed to invest in the Long Phu 3 thermal power plant in the Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta province of Soc Trang.

India's Tata Power Group is seeking approval to build the Long Phu 3 thermal power plant in Soc Trang Province.

This was reported on the province's official website soctrang.gov.vn.

Earlier, Tata Power had been granted approval by the Government to build the Long Phu 2 thermal power plant, expected to cost US$2 billion, in the province. In November 2013, the company inked a Memorandum of Understanding regarding the plant's construction with the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

The company wanted to invest in the Long Phu 3 project under the BOT (Build – Operate – Transfer) form and wanted to explore other investment opportunities in the wind power sector in the locality, the website said.

Long Phu 3 plant is also expected to cost roughly $2 billion, with a capacity of 2,000 MW.

During a recent meeting with the provincial People's Committee, Indronel Sengupta, chief representative from Tata Power in Viet Nam, said the company would open bids to choose technological consultants in May and a month later, it would negotiate related contracts with the ministry.

Meanwhile, the company's report on the environmental impact assessment of the project would receive approval from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment in the near future, he said.

The Chairman of the Soc Trang People's Committee, Nguyen Trung Hieu, also vowed to speed up land clearance in order to help the investor make the plant operational as scheduled.

With a capacity of 1,320 MW, the Long Phu 2 plant is expected to become operational in December 2020.
