CMC Technology Group (CMC) had decided to pour $20 million into mergers and acquisitions (M&A) to expand its footprint in Vietnam. VIR talks with the firm’s general director Nguyen Trung Chinh to shed some light on CMC’s M&A activities.

What is CMC’s plan to disburse its $20 million M&A funding?

The fund will be disbursed within five years. Our M&A activities might be much diversified, from setting businesses or joint ventures, to stock and idea procurement, or new establishments.

However, CMC’s M&A strategy is to focus on the technology field only. Thereby, the prime target of these investments is not profit, but what technologies to invest in and how their application potential would be.

How is the fund’s disbursement progress and how will CMC’s M&A activities take shape in the coming period?

CMC finalised four M&A ventures with over $5 million disbursed. The group is considering 10 other ventures, both at home and abroad and mainly involving in telecommunications and software.

It is not easy to present proper forecasts about the correct number of M&A ventures CMC will do in the coming period, as a number of factors would involve in finalising such a venture and reaching a consensus among parties is the most important.

Is it true that CMC will take part in the mobile phone market from early 2011?

CMC has worked on plans to manufacturing hand-held equipment, including laptops, mobiles, tablets PCs, and concentrating into 3G smart hand-sets. Our first mobile models would appear in the market from mid-January 2011.

Do you care about being a latecomer in the mobile market and what is your target?

It is often difficult for a new brand to compete with existing brands in the marketplace. However, with our certain strengths in manufacturing, distribution system and economic cooperation we are confident in our success. CMC will deliver the products to customers of all market segments and manages to be set among Vietnam’s top five best-selling mobile brands after one year joining the market.
