In our experience, the most successful and preferred employers are those organisations that work on helping employees achieve a good work-life balance. This is integral to increasing their work satisfaction and motivation, making them more engaged and responsive to business and customers’ needs.  By analysing their approach to employee management, we at Navigos Search can identify the following four common practices.

Recognition of early imbalance

Symptoms of an imbalance towards work comprise of increased error rates, absenteeism and lack of accomplishment. Line managers working with some of our clients are trained to identify this problem at an early stage to pre-empt employee burnouts. Some companies also proactively organise workshops to help employees eliminate unproductive work habits, get sufficient exercise, and encourage negotiations on working conditions.

Setting priorities at work

Employees tend to work overtime to get tasks done if they are unaware of what should be made a priority. You should ensure clarity in goal definition, since it has been identified as crucial in keeping employees away from work-related stress that saps their vitality. If you are a line manager, you can encourage your direct reports to schedule their work calendar as per priority levels and so finish tasks within a reasonable period of time.

Incorporation of flexible work policies

Companies following global employee engagement best practices assert that achieving a good work-life balance for employees can be as simple as enabling more flexibility. Discerning organisations opt for remote-working policies, in which employees can work from home, helping cut down on stress and unproductive time due to long commutes. Other flexitime policies, such as allowing workers to come in later or leave earlier to pick kids up, work arrangement with same/less hours can help employees have a better balance.

Limitations on work taken home

Many employees have a hard time ignoring work emails even on their days off. To become an employer of choice, your organisation can foster policies that urge employees to enjoy their personal time beyond the office without interruption. Managers should design specific policies to prevent employees taking work home, or guide them on how to work more efficiently.
