On August 16, GE volunteers in Ho Chi Minh City helped the Son Phu Elementary School in Giong Trom in the Mekong Delta province of Ben Tre by renovating classrooms and providing much needed new chairs, tables and doors. On the same day GE volunteers joined hands with the GE Volunteer Student Club – a group of outstanding students who received scholarships from the GE Foundation Scholar-Leaders Programme – to provide children at Lan Tranh Elementary and Secondary School in Dalat with essential education supplies. GE Vietnam also co-operated with the Ho Chi Minh City Red Cross to organise a blood donation drive on August 22, as blood stocks have fallen.
Last week GE’s Hanoi volunteers provided 75 sets of bedding for children at Ba Be Dormitory in the northern province of Bac Can. The activity was organised in association with the Mountain Children Fund to motivate poor children in mountainous areas to continue with their education.
Additionally, GE Haiphong will combine volunteer activities with a company outing for all employees on September 12 that involves clean up Bai Chay Beach in Halong city. The event follows last year’s campaign to raise the public awareness of conservation issues with the cleaning of Cat Ba Beach. This is expected to not only enhance community solidarity, but also underpin the overall goal of improving the quality of life for local residents.
“ASEAN Global Community Day has been part of GE’s global programme to demonstrate the company’s commitment to the communities around the world in which GE operates. Our volunteers have devoted their time and effort to meaningful community activities over the years,” said Nguyen My Lan, CEO at GE Vietnam.
She added that GE volunteers’ contributions have helped improve education, the environment, health and community development.
Global Community Day, an initiative powered by GE volunteers, is an annual event which takes place in the second half of every year. It helps GE employees learn to focus on the aforementioned areas of concern and encourages them to make an impact.
Volunteerism has been a vibrant part of GE’s culture for more than a century. The company annually coordinates volunteer efforts company-wide by keeping a close eye on social needs and inviting all employees to build stronger communities where they live and work.
GE global employees volunteer over one million hours of community service every year, discovering opportunities through GE’s online Volunteer Portal or right in their own neighbourhoods. And during Global Community Days, GE co-ordinates its efforts throughout the company to address urgent problems around the world.
