Dell last week launched a portfolio of blade, rack and tower PowerEdge 12th generation servers optimised for use in demanding enterprise environments in Vietnam following the firm’s global launch of the product in early March.

Bui Dinh Truong, Dell Vietnam country manager, spoke with VIR’s Song Ngoc about how the lastest PowerEdge would help strengthen Dell’s leading position in the local server market.

What’s your take on the scale and potential growth of the server market in Vietnam and Dell’s market share in this product segment?

Opportunities as well as the demands for IT infrastructure systems and solutions, especially multivendor operating system in Vietnam will grow stronger. Dell has made huge investments in this market in the recent years. With our investment and efforts Dell remained the leader of Vietnam in all business segments including consumer, small  -and - medium sized enterprise (SME) and government segments in the fourth quarter of 2011. In addition, if we consider the market share in server vendors and other products for enterprises, we see that Dell had yet to meet its true potential in Vietnam. Dell has led the server market share in Vietnam in some quarters, but in general, there are still many more opportunities for stronger growth. Therefore, we expect that the PowerEdge 12th generation servers will help reinforce Dell’s strength in this emerging market.

What is Dell’s target customer group for the PowerEdge 12th generation servers in Vietnam?

Dell designed the new PowerEdge 12th generation servers based on input gathered from more than 7,700 customer interactions in 17 countries across four continents. We understand the demand of all market segments, ranging from government and large, medium and small enterprises to data centres or even cloud computing providers. With the new servers, customers can help maximise efficiency by streamlining and automating operations to help achieve better business application performance and business continuity.

Do you think public and corporate spending cuts will affect Dell’s sales targets for the new PowerEdge 12th generation servers when they go on sale in Vietnam at the end of March?
Vietnam’s economy faced many difficulties in 2011, but Dell Vietnam still grew over 30 per cent and maintained the leading position in PC and notebook segments. In my opinion, the current difficulties may force the government and enterprises to tighten their spendings but they are beginning to realise that IT is the best tool for sustainable development and as a result IT investments can be maintained and even increased.

Dell has announced it is considering investments in manufacturing bases in Vietnam. Can you update us on this?

In VIR’s previous interview with our vice president of Dell Asia and Pacific  Amid Midha during his business trip to Vietnam, he mentioned the firm was considering the re-arrangement of Dell’s manufacturing bases in the region. We are currently examining the plan and still looking forward to the future possibilities in the domestic market.
