A representative of CMC Corporation said, "The company had detected signs of an attack on a small-scale technical service in the system. Immediately after that, the company activated the emergency response procedure according to regulations, thereby shortening the interruption time to a minimum without affecting users."
The system has now been restored and is operating stably again. The ransomware attack has not affected customers. In addition, CMC is coordinating with the Ministry of Public Security’s Department of Cyber Security and High-tech Crime Prevention to investigate and clarify the cause.
According to data by BKAV, ransomware attacks alone infected nearly 156,000 computers in the country last year, crippling businesses with ransom payments, operational shutdowns, customer losses, and reputational damage. Many victims faced severe financial strain after paying hackers to recover data, while others grappled with prolonged system outages.
For example, on the first day of a ransomware attack, a business lost more than VND100 billion ($3.87 million). Another company estimated damages of up to VND800 billion ($31 million) following a ransomware attack.
Cyberattacks have become a growing threat to the global economy, with some estimating damages as large as $9.5 trillion globally in 2024, according to Cybersecurity Ventures 2024.
Hackers stole $1.63 billion in cryptocurrency in the first quarter of 2025, a 131 per cent increase from Q1/2024’s $706 million. The biggest attack was on Bybit, which lost $1.46 billion, making up 92 per cent of total losses, according to blockchain security firms PeckShield and Immunefi.
